auch schon bisher angenommenen kosmischen Prinzipien der I (Welt-) Seele und (Welt-) Vernunft fügten sie noch ein k drittes höheres Prinzip. Konsequentermaßen; denn wenn die i Vernunft nicht innerhalb ihrer selbst, durch Vermittlung des I Denkens, das Wahre erfaßt, sondern, um das Absolute zu I ergreifen, um die Gottheit zu schauen, mit Verlust des Selbst- > bewußtieins über sich selbst hinausgehen muß, so kann nicht > die Vernunft das oberste Prinzip sein, sondem über ihr steht I als höheres Prinzip jenes Urwesen, mit welchem die Ver- I nunft eins werden muß, wenn sie das Wahre schauen will. > Dieses Urwesen nun nennt Plotin mit verschiedenen Namen, I bald das Erste, bald das Eine, bald das Gute, bald das über i dem Seienden Stehende, (das Seiende schwindet ihm zu einem I Nebenbegriffe der Vernunft zusammen und bildet in der Zu- I sammenordnung der obersten Begriffe mit der Vernunft ver- » Kunden nur die zweite Staffel,- Namen freilich, mit denen I Plotin das Wesen jenes Ur-Einen (ro s^) nicht genügend I ausdrücken, sondern nur bildlich bezeichnen will. Denken und I Wollen spricht er ihm ab, weil es keines Dinges bedürftig, I nichts begehren kann. Es ist nicht Energie, sondern über der I Energie. Leben kommt ihm nicht zu. Kein Seiendes, kein I Etwas und kein Wesen, auch keine von den allgemeinsten Ka- tegorieen des Seins kann ihm beigelegt werden, und was I dieser abwehrenden Bestimmungen mehr sind. Kurz, es ist I ein Unaussprechliches und Undenkbares. Plotin ist durchaus » bestrebt, das erste Prinzip nicht als erstes Prinzip, d. h. im D Verhältnis zu dem, was es begründet, sondem nur an sich, » als ein gänzlich Beziehungsloses zu uns und zu allen übrigen » Dingen zu denken. Diese reine Abstraktion kann er jedoch » nicht durchführen, wenn er nun werter sich anschickt, zu zeigen, I wie aus dem Ersten alles andere, zunächst die beiden andern » kosmischen Prinzipien, geworden oder emaniert sei. Um ein » Prinzip seiner Emanationslehre zu haben, sieht er sich ge- I nötigt, das Erste in seiner Beziehung zum Zweiten als ein I Erzeugendes zu setzen Md zu denken.
