Description Gertrude Bell - daughter of the industrialist Thomas Hugh Bell. She was born at Washington New Hall, the home of her grand-father Isaac Lowthian Bell on the 14th July 1868. She was the first women to gain a double first at Oxford, a distinguished Servant of the State, Oriental Secretary, scholar, linguist, climber, historian, archaeologist, explorer, poet and gardener friend of T. E. Lawrence (of Arabia) and A Friend of the Arabs . She founded with King Faizal the National Museum of Iraq and was its first Director, she died in Baghdad 12th July 1926." Some of her archaeological specimens can be seen in the Dorman Museum, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough and her collection of many thousands of photographs, many of which she developed herself and her letters are housed in the Robinson Library, at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
