Description
Deutsch: L. Cheyer: Leben und Tod (Allegorie), Buchillustration, 1882, Ausschnitt: Allegorie des Lebens.
Auf einem prunkvollen, kunstvoll gedrechselten Kandelaber lodert in einer Schale ein züngelndes Feuer, das Symbol des Lebens. Um den Feuerständer schlängeln sich zwei fast gegengleiche Volutenranken. Sie entspringen wie der Schwanz eines Fischleibs aus dem Körper eines Knaben mit Trinkschale und eines Mädchens mit einem Rosenzweig, die wie zum Ringelreihen Händchen halten. Der Unterleiber der Kinder münden in eine reich gezackte Akanthusranke, das sich spiralig zu einer Volute ringelt und am Ende eine Prachtblüte bzw. zwei Äpfel trägt, beides Symbole des Wachstums und damit des Lebens. Die Ranke verzweigt sich mehrmals und läuft zu den Ecken des Bildes nochmals in Voluten aus. Auf den oberen Rankenbögen zwitschern fröhlich zwei Tauben. Sie sind nicht nur Symbole des Friedens, sondern auch der Liebe und der Fortpflanzung, die das Leben im Gang hält. Zwei Schmetterlinge, Sinnbilder von Auferstehung und Unsterblichkeit, flattern in gefährlicher Nähe um das Feuer und symbolisieren so auch die Gefahren des Lebens.
