Summary

[edit]
Description

Navy pilots playing basketball in the forward lift well of USS Monterey (CVL-26). The jumper on the left is future U.S. President Gerald Ford. Ford enlisted in the navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor. After one month of training, he worked as instructor teaching elementary navigation skills. He was promoted to lieutenant in March 1943. Two months later, Ford was sent to the new aircraft carrier USS Monterey, where he served as the assistant navigator, Athletic Officer, and antiaircraft battery officer. In 1943, the carrier helped secure Makin Island in the Gilberts, and participated in carrier strikes against Kavieng, New Ireland in 1943. During the spring of 1944, the Monterey supported landings at Kwajalein and Eniwetok and participated in carrier strikes in the Marianas, Western Carolines, and northern New Guinea, as well as in the Battle of the Philippine Sea. Ford was injured in a series of accidents, involving a typhoon and a fire, so he was declared unfit for service. Ford ended in the Athletic Department until April 1945 and retired in 1946.
