Object history Provenance: On the reverse inscribed in french: Tableau offert a Cls. Decamps par le veuve de Georges Nobles 1934 (The picture bestowed upon Cls. Dechamp by the widow of Georges Noblet 1934). The collection of Birte Inge Christensen and John Hunov. Sold at Bruun Rasmussen Auctions on October 3, 2022 for DKK 5,000 (Lot 2240/​154).

Notes A fantasy by Clairin for Sarah Bernhardt (1844–1923), who is depicted with her back turned, celebrating the play “Les Mauvais Bergers” by Octave Mirbeau (1848–1917), who appears in the drawing with his back against the tree. The play was shown at Théâtre de la Renaissance in Paris on December 14th. 1897. Clairin is depicted sitting on a palette on the lower right.
