  • Signed: J. W.
  • Widow Anna McNeill Whistler and her two boys returned to America in the summer of 1849; the drawing was probably done then or shortly after while they stayed with her sister Kate Palmer in Stonington.
  • Matted with the drawing: A carbon copy of a letter dated May 8, 1936, from Lillian MacNeill Palmer to Putnam, Librarian of Congress, explaining the circumstances of her finding the drawing and its subsequent acquisition by the Library.
  • Off-white laid paper with 1/8 in. black border (mourning paper), folded horizontally at center; partial watermark of Prince of Wales' feathers above a double arch (incomplete), f.s.
  • On back: Black collector's stamp of J & E R Pennell (Lugt Suppl. 874a) and black stamp of L.C. Fine Arts Division (Lugt Suppl. 926f).
