Text Appearing After Image:
GENERAL WAYNE?S ESCAPE THE INDIANS TAKE PART AGAINST THE AMERICAN COLONIES. 313 June 24, 1782. We now come to the last Indian fight of the war. A short time beforethe British forces evacuated Savannah, General Anthony Wayne, whocommanded the American force in its vicinity, was surprised in his campby the Creek chieftain, Guristersigo. This warrior, intending to join theBritish with his followers, had marched through Georgia unobserved, andfell upon the rear of Waynes camp at three oclock in themorning. Wayne was not expecting an attack, especiallyfrom Indians, but his men, as usual, slept on their arms that night andwere ready for action. Guristersigo intended to strike Waynes picket - guard, stationed at alittle distance from the main body; as the two had that day exchangedplaces, he ignorantly attacked the stronger instead of the weaker party. The onset was furious; but, aroused by the Indian warwhoop, the infantryquickly seized their arms, and the artillerymen hastened to their guns
