Summary[edit]

Description

I have arrived at Boston Logan Airport; I am staying in Boston for two nights, followed by four nights in New York City.

Although this was not the gate I arrived at, I needed to take a photo. An American flag hangs over the jetway for Gate C19, to commemorate Flight 175, which had departed from this gate at about 8:00 AM on 11 September 2001. It was hijacked by terrorists, and crashed into New York City's World Trade Center an hour later.

My previous visit to the East Coast had taken me to New York City's 9/11 Memorial and allowed me to reflect on the losses suffered that day. Even though I do not know the victims personally, I knew both the World Trade Center and the Flight 175 aircraft quite well, and it is still quite a personal experience to think about it.

At Boston Logan, United Airlines uses half a dozen gates at Concourse C. The rest of the concourse is JetBlue Airways' Boston hub. C19 won't be a United gate much longer, as JetBlue plans on taking over the entire Concourse C. Continental Airlines' gates are at Concourse A, and they remain there even after Continental merged with United, giving United a split presence at Boston; United plans to eventually consolidate its Boston operations at Concourse A. Similarly, at Newark, Gate A17, which had been United 93's departure gate and similarly had an American flag hanging, no longer serves mainline United flights, as post-merger United uses Continental's Global Gateway at Terminal C.
