A “arquitectura modernista” da Gare do Oriente, construída na capital portuguesa no âmbito da Exposição Mundial de 1998, foi considerada uma das “mais espectaculares do mundo” pela Emporis, empresa baseada em Hamburgo, Alemanha, que se dedica a fornecer informação e estudos sobre construção em todo o mundo. Mais ou menos subjectiva, o certo é que a selecção da empresa está a fazer o pleno mediático, com destaque em medias dos mais diversos países (incluindo gigantes globais como a CNN). A lista divulgada recentemente integra dez estações que se tornaram “marcos arquitectónicos únicos” das cidades onde foram construídas, com “as suas coberturas pouco convencionais, cores brilhantes e formas extravagantes”, e dois edifícios ainda em construção que irão “estabelecer novos padrões na arquitectura das estações”. Além da Gare do Oriente, o "ponto de confluência de toda a rede de transportes públicos que serve a zona oriental de Lisboa, articulando o metro, o comboio, autocarros e táxis" (como resume a CP), o top proposto pela Emporis inclui outra estação igualmente desenhada pelo arquitecto espanhol Santiago Calatrava: a Gare de Liège-Guillemins, na Bélgica — “um dos novos projectos mais marcantes”, graças ao “impressionante impacto causado pela gigantesca cobertura em arco que abrange toda a estação”.
