O arquitecto Santiago Calatrava foi o arquitecto escolhido para o desenvolvimento da Estação do Oriente,aproveitando a rede ferroviária já existente. Houve essa necessidade através da exposição dos oceanos Expo'98,que reuniu milhares de visitantes e a partir daí a zona oriental de Lisboa tornou-se numa das maiores zonas de escritórios da cidade. Deste modo, para permitir o escoamento de milhares de pessoas diariamente a estação reúne os meios ferroviários ( metro e comboio) e rodoviários ( rede urbana,suburbana e internacional de autocarros,praça de taxis e estacionamento).
