Robertsville State Park Missouri 8/25/18 with Kyran Leeker On Facebook, folks helped me to ID these. Here are some remarks. Cassie Novak: "Yes! These look to be caused by varieties of Gall Wasps. Flies, mites, midges and aphids can also make galls." Michael Palmer: "I'm pretty sure every one of these (or at least most of these) is Caryomyia. I would wager that the leaf is a hickory or pecan leaf." Michael Palmer: "Ray Gagne wrote an excellent article on this genus, which is poorly understood (but as that goes for all of the Cecidomyiidae except for the Hessian fly, it isn't saying much)."
More Michael Palmer remarks: Caryomyia sanguinolenta - Hickory Smooth Gumdrop Gall Midge Note the lacewing egg one one. [the little white sac at the end of a thread - just watched one lay one on the sheet at home last night, 20180828 - cool!] I've noticed them on Phylloxera galls of hickory. Also the black skinny thing is probably a thrips - they tend to be predators on gall inhabitants. A long story how I got started. But I am a retired botanist, so at least I got a bit of a head start. With gallmakers, leafminers, stem borers, etc. you need to know the plants first. You will note that some of these haven't yet been reared to adulthood - and have been named only on the basis of the galls and larvae. So this is a field in which a beginner can make a substantial |
