Title Gallo, Robert and Sabin, Albert
Description Albert B. Sabin, M.D. (left) and Robert Gallo, M.D. (right). Dr. Sabin discoverer of the polio vaccine. In 1961, the United States Public Health Service endorsed his "live" polio-virus vaccine. Prepared with cultures of attenuated polio viruses, it could be taken orally to prevent contraction of the disease. It was this vaccine that effectively eliminated polio from the United States. Dr. Sabin also served as a full-time expert consultant for the National Cancer Institute in 1974. Dr. Gallo, former Biomedical Researcher, National Institutes of Health. He is best known for his work with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the infectious agent responsible for the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). He was the former Chief of Laboratory of Tumor Cell Biology at the National Institutes of Health. See also http://www.history.nih.gov/NIHInOwnWords/docs/page_12.html.
