| Description |
This is one of the most important bird sanctuaries on the island. It is visited by hundreds of visitors annually to experience a rare view of some of the birds which succeed in arriving in Malta through an indiscriminate barrage of lead shot fired by irresponsible hunters awaiting the migratory birds on sea craft ready to fire at anything which flies overhead. The Bird Sanctuary is very well kept and professional tagging and tracking is held here, this helps ornithologists all over the world to keep track of bird migration. Although this sanctuary plays a very important role to keep birds protected, we are still far away from having an educated population which realizes that birds should be enjoyed flying and not to be stuffed by taxidermists and put on show in the hunter’s showcase. Lately it has been noticed that certain species are also breeding in this sanctuary although they are always threatened by bird shooters who even dare go into the sanctuary itself to down the birds.
