Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Furnace building - Silvermines, Co. Tipperary This old furnace house dates from the older period of working of the Ballygown South mine at Silvermines. This mine was worked mainly for calamine (an ore of zinc), lead and sulphur. The furnace was used for roasting ore as part of the process of separating waste material. As part of the remediation of this abandoned mining site, it is hoped to preserve this building and the nearby Cornish-style engine house as historic monuments.
