fthe most agreeable of the whole trip if the weather hadnot been so rough and cold, notwithstanding the brightsunshine. What was to have been a pleasant trip wasthus spoiled; and though we had not ice enough on boardto go skating, there were daily hail and snow-storms,which compelled us to use shovels more than once. Wealso had quite heavy fogs at times. The day after the last storm there floated reeds andsea-weed in large quantities all around us. On Tuesday,the 26th, we took a new kind of visitors on board in theshape of a hitherto unseen species of sea-birds. As theair was unusually calm, we were able to catch quite anumber of them in the previously described manner andhad at one time no less than fifteen of them running roundthe deck; we threw the whole flock overboard as soon asevening came and how they seemed to enjoy the swim-ming again. They were undoubtedly the most beautifulswimming fowls we had thus far seen; though dreadfullystupid and greedy, and therefore easy to catch. We onlycame across this species once more during our voyageand that was on the other side of Patagonia, in nearly thesame latitude. Saturday, the 30th, we discovered what the sailors callfat geese, which, though yet at a great distance, dis-closed to us the proximity of the Falkland Islands; andthe 3d of September we were surprised by seeing a tre-mendous whale. Toward evening of the same day wecaught a little land-bird, which, tired from its long flight,had fallen on our fore-deck.
