DescriptionFriedrich-I-of-Prussia-thaler-003.jpg |
English: Obverse of 1707 silver thaler, 39 mm, 21 g. Friedrich I of Prussia (1657-1713) of the Hohenzollern dynasty was (as Friedrich III) Elector of Brandenburg (1688-1713) and the first King of Prussia (1701-1713). In 1707 Prussia was part of the Holy Roman Empire.
This coin, one in the YiShin Collection of Silver Dollars, was found in Zhili (or Chili), northern Qing China province surrounding the Forbidden City capital. It was probably brought by the Germans as trade currency to Kiautchou (or Jiaochou) treaty port in present-day Qingdao city, Shantung Province, not too far to the immediate west where the anti-Christian anti-imperialist Yihetuan Boxer Rebellion exploded at the turn of the 20th century. |
