Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in July 2021: the house at 33 Hines Street in Buffalo, New York is unusual in that, despite its intended usage as partially prefabricated modular housing for working-class renters, it's a single-family residence, rather than one of the two-unit "Buffalo doubles" that were far more common for such purposes in the era of its construction. More specifically, it's a one-and-a-half-story wood-framed house whose asymmetrical pedimented front porch is vaguely suggestive of Queen Anne architecture, though on the whole, the spartan and utilitarian design of the house precludes any stylistic categorization. Dating to 1905, this was among the first houses to be constructed in the South Buffalo subdivision to which it belongs, and like most others of its ilk, it was home to a revolving door of residents most of whom worked as unskilled or semi-skilled industrial laborers, the longest-tenured of whom was also its first: carpenter Frederick W. Carter (1873-1957), who lived there for four years along with his wife Anna and two sons.
