Summary

[edit]
Description

Woodcut of Franklin typewriter, Type 2, from 1893 advertisement in railroad magazine. The Franklin was invented and patented by Wellington Parker Kidder in 1891 and made by the Franklin Typewriter and Supply Co., Boston, USA, from 1891 through 1907. The large key to left of spacebar is a shift, to right is a shift-lock. Besides the curved keyboard, one innovative feature of this machine is the direct gear linkage between the keys and typebars, a much simpler mechanism than those used by other typewriters of the time. For more information, see Richard Polt, Franklin, The Classic Typewriter Page. Alterations: removed ad copy from around woodcut, increased brightness. The brightness discontinuity of image on right side of keyboard was probably a scanning artifact.

Text from advertisement: "The Franklin Typewriter. Price: $60.00. Writing all in sight. Weighs but 12 1/2 lbs. Special terms to railroad men. The Franklin Typewriter and Supply Co., Philadelphia, PA."
