Dear Em,
I must thank you again for making my little Charley so happy by your beautiful present. He is enraptured with it, - & pulls it over the frozen snow looking back with constant admiration. Then he bursts out – “Oh what a beautiful sled this is – I laugh on my sled – I like it very much.” He means he [p. 2] cannot help laughing with pleasure when his papa pulls him on it. Then he is so careful to see it put away safely “so the dogs cant hurt it” & says “Aunt Emmeline is very good” many times. It has been an era in his little life, linking him with older boys whose sports he looks upon with envy. He burst out to Henry the other day – “I wish I was a man –“ Why? Because I never was”!!
[p. 3] Last night – I went to Cora Lyman’s ball! Being her first & the last of the season, probably, I decided to go, & enjoyed it very much. The arrangements were most ample & admirable. A carpeted corridor took us from the sidewalk to the staircase, which was all carpeted for the occasion, &, so shut in, bu rich curtains from the entries that it seemed just like a private house. We disrobed in the two great drawing-rooms, ascended to [p. 4] the ball-rooms over those, & thro’ a corridor, perfumed with magnificent flowers, to tow more fine drawing-rooms beyond, one for cards & the other for supper. It was a very splendid ball, & I was glad to look again on so many familiar faces. Cora looked very pretty & being animated by the occasion. I hope to be in on Thursday & will see you if possible –
