On 8 February 1974 - after 84 days in space - the crew of Skylab 4 returned to Earth. The mission was the third of its kind, and its crew were the last aboard the first American space station. The three astronauts in Skylab 4 launched on 16 November 1973, and while in space performed scientific experiments in the areas of medical activities, solar observations, Earth resources, observation of the Comet Kohoutek, and other experiments. Not all was smooth sailing however. As the activation of Skylab progressed, the astronauts complained of being pushed too hard. Ground crews disagreed; they felt that the astronauts were not working long enough, and insisted they work through their meal times and rest days to catch up. Six weeks into the mission, the crew mutinied. They announced an unscheduled day off, and turned off the communications radio while getting some rest. They reportedly spent their day off relaxing and taking in the panoramic views of Earth from orbit. This image of the South Island was taken from Skylab 4 (whether it was taken during their mutinous day off is unknown). It was presented to New Zealand Prime Minister, Robert Muldoon, when he visited the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Centre in 1977.
