Looking ENE from Falls of the Ohio
Left of center is rust-stained pier at SW end of Indiana Chute span of L&I Bridge (Fourteenth Street Bridge).
At right are two of the five upper gates of McAlpine Dam. (There are four more gates further downriver, next to LG&E's hydro-electric plant.) These gates, 100 feet wide and 22 feet high, are called Tainter gates after their designer, Jeremiah Burnham Tainter (1836–1920).
When water is released from the upstream pool, the gate is raised by cables connected to electric motors in the whitish housings at the top of the structure. The gate pivots on the arms on either side, allowing the water to flow underneath. As seen here, a small amount of water flows under the gates even when they are closed. It looks like a man is trying to net small fish which have passed under the gate.
If a gate fails or needs repairs, maintenance bulkheads (seen at the top of vertical slots in the gate structure) can be lowered to block the water flow.
The yellow sign atop the gate structure reads, "Warning: Siren means increased flow." This warns people to get off the outer fossil beds before the gates are opened.
