Description |
English: On November 27, 1911, the "Native Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington, Prior to 1870" was organized in Seattle by sixty women from all over the Pacific Northwest to honor their pioneer heritage. The organization still exists as of 2018, now called Daughters of the Pioneers of Washington, and promotes historic preservation and education. In this image four women pose together in conjunction with the organization's annual breakfast, held April 21, 1920, at the Hotel Sorrento. They are identified from left as: Janet Christina (Law) Wilson (1873-1942), president, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Law, who came to Steilacoom in 1863; Alice Mae Calhoun (1870-1934), recording secretary, daughter of Dr. George V. Calhoun (1838-1916), who came to Washington in 1865; Ada (Woodruff) Anderson (1860-1956), guest of honor and author of several books, including "The Heart of the Red Firs: A Story of the Pacific Northwest"; and Juanita (Edwards) Johnson (1881-1968), corresponding secretary, granddaughter of Isaiah L. Scammon, who came to Montesano in 1852. Caption information source: https://wapioneerdaughters.org/about-us Caption information source: The Seattle Sunday Times, April 18, 1920, p. 46
