Description

Courtenay Window, Exeter Cathedral, Glass by Wippell & Co. Probably designed by Erridge.. Members of the Courtenay family, all Bishops, from the 14th C onwards. Left to right:

  • w:William Courtenay (c.1342-1396) was Archbishop of Canterbury (1381–1396), having previously been Bishop of Hereford and Bishop of London. He was a younger son of Hugh de Courtenay, 10th Earl of Devon (died 1377), and his wife Margaret de Bohun, a daughter of Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford and granddaughter of Edward I.
  • w:Richard Courtenay (d.1415), Bishop of Norwich 1413-15. He was a son of Sir Philip Courtenay of Powderham Castle in Devon, and a grandson of Hugh de Courtenay, 10th Earl of Devon (died 1377). He was a nephew of William Courtenay, Archbishop of Canterbury,
  • w:Peter Courtenay (c.1432-1492) was Bishop of Exeter (1478–87) and Bishop of Winchester (1487-92). He was the third son of Sir Philip Courtenay (d. 1463) of Powderham by his wife Elizabeth Hungerford, a daughter of Walter Hungerford, 1st Baron Hungerford.
  • Henry Reginald Courtenay (1741–1803) was Bishop of Bristol (1794–1797) and Bishop of Exeter 1797–1803. He was the eldest surviving son of Henry Reginald Courtenay, M.P., the second surviving son of Sir William Courtenay, 2nd Baronet, of Powderham, and the younger brother of William Courtenay, 1st Viscount Courtenay.
