Title
English: Four-masted bark ALSTER at anchor, Tacoma, Washington, ca. 1900
Description
English: Handwritten on verso: Alster 4 m. bark The Alster was built in 1890 by Harland & Wolff of the United Kingdom. She was first named CALIFORNIA, and owned by Ismay's White Star Lines. This ship was the last sailing ship owned White Star Line. She was sold in 1896 to Ritson & Livesey of Liveropool, and then nearly immediately sold to Sloman of Hamburg and renamed Alster. She was sold again in 1898 to another Hamburg firm. She was bought by Schramm in 1912. During World War One she was in Valparaiso, Chile, where the crew rendered her inoperable in order to prevent her use by the allies. In 1926 she went ashore on the island of Old Providence in the Caribbean where she remains.
