Summary[edit]

Description
English: Foundations, Ayton Ironstone Mine The Ayton Ironstone Mine entrance was actually at the top of the self-acting incline, a quarter of a mile long and 1 in 4 at its steepest. The building in the distance dates from 1919 where an electric fan was installed, the first mine in the Cleveland area to be electrified. Because of its proximity to Capt. Cook's Monument the mine became known locally as the Monument Mine. It's been suggested that the concrete foundations nearest were for either a compressor or water tank. It seems to me that either of these would not require such a substantial block of concrete.
