Title
English: Fossil Butte Member Type Section
Description
English:

A craggy cliff face with a steeply sloping hill below.

A type section is the best exposure of rocks in that unit. Formations and members are named after geographic place names. In this case, Fossil Butte Member is named after Fossil Butte on which it occurs. There are two other members associated with Fossil Lake deposits: the Angelo Member is named for the nearby Angelo Ranch and the Road Hollow Member is named after the valley in which the section occurs. All commercial fossil collecting occurs within the Fossil Butte Member.
