Description |
English: A dirt path leads to the door of a one and one-half story wooden house, still under construction. Fort Vancouver. This reconstruction (2009) represents a village house that was originally built around the 1840s. It is a post-on-sill construction with a gable roof, glad with wood shingles. A wood plank door faces south. The finished house has a working fireplace and chimney that supports park interpretive programs. The village, outside of the fort stockade, was generally inhabited by the lower ranks of HBC employees and their families. At its peak, it housed between 300 and 600 people and was the largest multi-cultural settlement in the Pacific Northwest.
