Former home of: Alger Hiss (alleged Soviet Spy and former US State Dept official) Located: 2905 P Street NW Alger Hiss (November 11, 1904 ? November 15, 1996) was a U.S. lawyer, civil servant, administrator, businessman, author, and lecturer. On August 3, 1948, Whittaker Chambers testified under subpoena before HUAC about the Ware Group (which reported to the Soviet GRU), of which he said Hiss a member. In September 1948, Hiss filed a defamation lawsuit against Chambers, out of whose pretrial activities the "Pumpkin Papers" came to light and led to Hiss' indictment by US DOJ in December 1950 and conviction on two counts of perjury in January 1950. |
