Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in September 2021. The building at 48 East Huron Street (corner Ellicott Street) is one of the oldest extant structures in downtown Buffalo, New York. Dating to 1851, it's an amply proportioned, two-and-a-half-story brick building that continues to ably exemplify the principles of the contemporaneously popular Italianate style of architecture despite a number of tasteless alterations over the years: a modernized and largely plywood-covered ground floor where once were vintage storefront windows; newer four-over-four windows on the second floor; the removal of what were once apparently stone lintels or segmental arches above the remaining upper-story windows. Contrarily, still intact are the round-arched double attic windows and the elegant brackets that undergird the widely overhanging eaves of the roof. The building functioned initially as the home and store of French-born grocer Peter Faver (c. 1811-1881), who lived and kept his shop there until his retirement in about 1876. It later came under the ownership of the Simon Electric Company, which was headquartered in the five-story building next door (background) from 1926 until just a few years ago. It's now vacant and under redevelopment courtesy of D.C.-based developer Douglas Jemal.
