Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen at 25 St. Andrew's Walk in Buffalo, New York in August 2022: the former stable, now converted for residential purposes, is the last remaining component of the former Louis Schoellkopf estate on Oakland Place, once one of the finest in the neighborhood, which was built in 1893 and otherwise demolished in the early 1960s to make way for the upscale, mock-Georgian townhouses of St. Andrew's Walk. A simple two-story brick structure, it along with the rest of the property were designed by the locally prominent architect Charles Day Swan. A member of one of Buffalo's most wealthy and prominent families, Louis Schoellkopf (1855-1901) was the eldest son of family patriarch Jacob, who started his career in his father's tannery before advancing into a robust business career - with executive positions in a number of local firms including the Power City Bank of Niagara Falls, the Cliff Paper Company, and the Niagara Falls Hydraulic Power and Manufacturing Company - that was cut short suddenly and unexpectedly by his death at the young age of 46. The property is now part of the Elmwood East Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
