Summary
[edit]DescriptionFormer D. B. Farrell & Brother grocery store and coal dealership, Maurice Scanlon grocery et al. - Buffalo, New York - 20210121.jpg |
English: As seen in January 2021: the building at 134 East Ferry Street (corner Masten Avenue) in Buffalo, New York represents the turn-of-the-century Italian Renaissance Revival style adapted to the form of a commercial building in a way that seems mundane at first glance, but becomes surprisingly exquisite upon remarking at the details. In accordance with the style, the windows feature trim and surrounds that vary from floor to floor, which is precisely where you see much of the fine detailing that distinguished the building's design: the second-floor windows topped with segmental arches and cut-stone keystones; those on the third floor surrounded on three sides by ornamental brickwork in a Greek key motif. Elsewhere, the brickwork is fashioned into quoins ascending the sides of the façade, the top of the building features a continuous stone string course topped with a frieze and a dentil course at the roofline, and a round-arched side entrance on the southeast corner of the building (seen at right here, somewhat in the shadows) comprises a round arch flanked by Doric pilaster strips festooned with Vitruvian scroll reliefs. Sadly, the egg-and-dart moldings in the spandrel panels on the two-story bay window have been covered with modern vinyl siding. The building was erected in 1898 and served as home to the firm of D. B. Farrell and Brother, a dealer in coal, wood, and (later) groceries. The lots immediately to the right and rear of the building as seen here were then occupied by a coal yard. In 1905, the space was taken over by grocer Maurice Scanlon, who was in business until 1923. |
