| Description |
English: Former Central Station, Rugby This is looking down from the Hillmorton Road bridge onto what remains of Rugby Central station. Rugby was once an important stop on the Great Central route between London Marylebone and Sheffield; unfortunately, however, the station only lasted 70 years, finally closing in 1969, a victim of the then prevailing view that there was no room for 'duplicate' routes. Many would now argue that was a very short-sighted decision and that the line would be of immense value today in an age of ever-increasing congestion on the remaining network. In spite of 40 years of abandonment, however, it is still possible to walk along the old platform, now maintained as a nature trail. Note that the edge of the island platform can still be discerned in the foreground. |
