Gray or wbitiisb throuj^liout, especially the limbs andtwigs, wbicb ai-e more or less coated with very minute white down. The trunkbark of large trees is deeply and narrowly seamed, hard and rough, with smallscales. Very few leaves (fig. 177) are prodiiced, and these, white-downy andgland-dotted, are shed soon after reaching mature size, so that the tree or shrubcommonly appears leafless. Flowers deep indigo blue (hence the name indigobush), the outer basal covering of the blossoms (calyx) 10-ribbed, with aglandular spot between each of the six upper ribs.
