The genus Dalea contains a large niunber of shrubs and herbaceous i)lantsand but one tree species. The tree occurs in our southwest. Most of the repre-sentatives belong to Mexico and South America. Foliage marked with minuteglandular dots (flg. 177). The small blossoms, which resemble pea flowers Ingeneral appearance, combine male (pollen bearing) and female (fruit bearing)organs. The trunkbark of large trees is deeply and narrowly seamed, hard and rough, with smallscales. Very few leaves (fig. 177) are prodiiced, and these, white-downy andgland-dotted, are shed soon after reaching mature size, so that the tree or shrubcommonly appears leafless. Flowers deep indigo blue (hence the name indigobush), the outer basal covering of the blossoms (calyx) 10-ribbed, with aglandular spot between each of the six upper ribs. The calyx adheres to thesmall beaked, one-seeded pod (fig. 177), which is also gland-dotted. The shiny,light brown, kidney-shaped seeds are mottled with dark brown. Wood, rich chocolate brown, with
