becomes i)ale red-brown with an ashen tinge. The bark is very hard, close,and horny; rarely over If inches thick on old trunks, and scarcely an inchthick on trees from 18 to 20 inches in diameter. The deep yellow-groen shiny foliage is somewhat thin in appearance becauseof the characteristic spreading, especially of lower leaves. The leaves ofthe lower crown branches are flat, grooved, blunt, and distinctly notched attheir euds (tig. 4U) ; they appear to grow and to stand out distinctly from two FOREST TREES OF THE PACIFIC SLOPE. 113 opposite sides only of the branclies. Many of the leaves are brought into thisposition by a twisting of their bases (fig. 41). Leaves of the lower crown arefrom li to about 2J inches long. Leaves of the uppermost branches are oftennotched, also, but are usually all more or less crowded together, pointing up-ward, on the top of the sprays, while the scattered leaves of the leader aresharp or keenly pointed. Abies yrandis, middle ciown l)ranch. inch or IJ inches long. All leaves are conspicuously white on their under sur-faces. Mature buds are covered with resin, and the twigs of the season arepale russet brown and minutely hairy. The cones mature in early fall, and wMththeir clear, light yellow-green color and slender, cylindrical form are verycharacteristic (fig. 42). They are about 2A to 4^ inches long and about 1 toli inches in diameter. The bracts adhering to the backs of the cone-scales are 114 FOREST TREES OF THE PACIFIC SLOPE. squarish at their upper ends (trunoatedi mikI with a small point extendingfrom the center. The pale yellowish brown seeds (tij,. 42, a) have shiny,faintly yellowish winjis. Seed leaves, very slender and pointed, usually G,and about three-fourths of an inch hmtc. Wood of this fir is little known coni-niercially. but likely to become better known and of greater value.
