ow solved bythe quartermaster who issues eight days rations of crackers, cofifee,sugar, salt, etc to each soldier. The mules are now relieved while wehave about twenty pounds added to our loads and about the amountwe had at the beginning of this march. We dont have to help themules and horses over the hard spots now, but the mules are help-ing many of the boys who are climbing in wagons when exhaustedand for a few days we notice an increase in the amount of clothingand number of blankets boys are leaving along the roadside. Therations are consumed by many in about one half the time the foodis expected to last, the boys preferring to feast liberally rather thanbe burdened with their loads. Plenty of chinquopins and occasionalpatches of corn are found in the mountains, these helping along. Weare given a ration of fresh beef each day from cattle that are drivenalong with the army supply train and slaughtered as needed. On this march we are accompanied by the First Tennessee Caval-ry under command of Col. Jim. Brownlow, son of Parson Brownlow.This father and son together with many members of this regimenthave been driven from their homes in East Tennessee. Conscriptingofficers in Confederate service, and bushwhackers forced these mento either enter the rebel army or become refugee^. The boys are nowheaded in the direction of their homes and little mercy is shownscouting rebel soldiers and bushwhackers that fall into their hands.Thej- are keepng our advance clear of rebel scouts and spies and aredelighted with the job.
