Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Foot of Steele Lane at Penny Hill, Barkisland, with base of mill chimney. The chimney is for Firth House Mill, and is detached, presumably so that it could be sited on higher ground to produce a stronger current of air and consequently a higher temperature. The top end of the chimney, above the trees, can be seen on other photos. Why Steele Lane now has an 'e' on the end is a mystery. It was 'Steel' on the 6" map of c.1940 and the farm is still Steel Lane Farm.
