Famed British Woman Soldier Expires At 80. Wickham Market, England (Associated Press) Flora Sandes, adventure loving Englishwoman who fought in the Serbian army in World War I, died at her home near here Friday. She was 80. At the beginning of the 1914-1918 war she went to Serbia with a nursing unit and served at the front with an infantry regiment against the Bulgarians. Yearning for more action, she tore the Red Cross off her sleeves one day, picked up, a rifle and began her fighting career. Sgt. Sandes, as she was then known, was removed from her last fight with more than 20 wounds. In the hospital she was presented with the order of Kara-George, the highest decoration which could be given a Serbian soldier. She was made an officer by a special act of the Serbian parliament and became a captain.

Works copyrighted before 1964 had to have the copyright renewed sometime in the 28th year. If the copyright was not renewed the work is in the public domain. No renewal notice found for the Troy Record or the Associated Press for items published in the year 1956. For instance I can find a renewal notice for the New York Times for this year. If you find a renewal notice under a variation of the name of the publication, or a successor name of the publication, or any other evidence to the contrary, notify me and I will delete this.
