English: Hurricanes Harvey and Irma were devastating storms for Texas and Florida, respectively. A large part of their impact was from disastrous flooding, which inundated large expanses of land. This experimental flood map, developed by scientists at George Mason University with NOAA support, used data from the NOAA/NASA Suomi-NPP satellite’s VIIRS instrument and NOAA GOES-16 Advanced Baseline Imager to create a detailed and comprehensive flood zone map. The left image shows large areas of severe flooding (dark turquoise) from Hurricane Harvey along the Gulf on August 31, 2017. The right image shows the same in Florida from Irma on September 11, 2017. NOAA’s flood maps allow teams on the ground to plan for evacuations and determine where to focus their recovery efforts.
