Summary[edit]

Description
English: Pheasants were raised indoors for 4 weeks then gradually let outside for the next 14 weeks before market. These conditioning pens allowed the different ages groups of pheasant to be separated. At 6-8 weeks the young poults would be let into much larger flight pens that allowed the pheasants to fly and exercise their wings.

Conditioning pens were no higher than 7 feet - all covered by a 1" nylon mesh net. Flight pens were 16' high and covered by 2" nylon nets.
Each spring the pens were tilled and planted with rapeseed, corn, sunflower, oats, and barley to provide ground cover and food for the pheasants. This cover crop was supplemented by pelleted pheasant food.
Eventually the farms used 1000s of cedar poles, several miles of fencing and acres of nylon net to house the 10s of thousand of pheasants annually.
