Description Spc. Terry Mills of Brandon, Miss., pulls Staff Sgt. Ryan Stumpff into a Black Hawk medevac helicopter July 4 in Khowst province, Afghanistan. Stumpff, a 4th BCT, 25th Infantry Division Soldier out of Fort Richardson, Alaska, was stranded on a narrow cliff while escaping an enemy ambush, requiring Valkyrie medevac, a dual-state National Guard unit working with the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade to perform a dangerous hoist extraction under enemy fire while navigating dangerous terrain. Stumpff had been shot in the head by an enemy insurgent, but suffered only a superficial wound as the bullet passed through the back of his helmet, grazed the top of his head, and exited through the front.
