Summary

[edit]
Description

Mount Logan Natural Area, Clinton County, within Bald Eagle State Forest.

The natural area comprises 510-plus acres of forested land draping the slopes and summit of Mount Logan (elevation 2108 feet [643 meters]), a prominent peak on Bald Eagle Mountain. The slopes contain masses of talus; at the summit is a narrow, jumbled outcrop of Tuscarora quartzite.

Despite the rocks and limited soil, pockets of old-growth trees manage to survive here. Hemlocks, white pines, red and chestnut oaks, and black and yellow birches grow abundantly. Some of the hemlocks are, sadly, infested with the woolly adelgid, an exotic insect pest.
