Summary

[edit]
Description
English: 13 February 2014. In Circular Road, Tottenham N17. Three new photos added to my ongoing set: 'I' is for Imitation. Which refers to the saying: "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery".

The purple bags in the photos are either waste from litter bins, or swept by street cleaners working for Veolia - Haringey Council's waste contractors. They await collection by Veolia's vehicles.

To make it clear, I'm not criticising our local street cleaners. They do a difficult job in all weathers. And they do it following the system set by their bosses. It's a system agreed between Veolia and Haringey council. But one obvious problem with it is delay in collecting the purple bags. (Sometimes they remain overnight.)

This - in my view - encourages more street dumping by a few residents. How? Because people see the purple bags as an invitation to add more to an "official" pile - which someone is soon coming to pick-up. (Other residents have the same idea about litter bins.)

In other words, the purple bag system has a 'perverse' unintended consequence. It 'models' behaviour we don't want. The result is more rubbish routinely dumped on our streets as part of an informal "Third System".

Naturally, over 16 years as an elected local councillor, (1998-2014) I've raised this issue with Haringey's Environment Department. *

═════════════════════════ § Before 1 April 2011 Haringey's waste management contractor was Haringey Enterprise. Their waste "magnets" were green bags. § * Haringey Council's previous leaders changed the name of the former Environment Department. It became the: "Place and Sustainability Directorate". Yes, it's true. I'm not making up that pretentious, posturing, cryptic and confusing name.

(As a joke, I did invent and suggest an even sillier alternative: Department of Place, Time & Entropy.)
