Summary[edit]

Description
English: "The flag belonged to chieftain Daskalakis and bears the inscription Ι[ΗΣΟΥ]Σ Χ[ΡΙΣΤΟ]Σ ΝΙ ΚΑ (Jesus Christ wins) an dthe initials "K, E, E, Θ", which stand for Crete, Union, Freedom or Death. The bloodstained flag was saved thanks to the heroic defence of the besieged monks and fighters during the holocaust of the Arkadi Monastery.

The events that took place in the Arkadi Monastery, which is situated near Rethymno, marked the great Cretan Revolt of 1866 - 1869 and raised international sympathy of the Cretan struggle.

Not only the Cretans but all people in liberated Greece, Europe and America were agitated by the self-sacrifice of the people in Arkadi Monastery. Volunteers from various places went to the island in order to fight and funds were raised for supporting the struggle. Scenes from the events were depicted in paintings and engravings or on everyday use objects, such as crockery sets and others."
