Français : OCTOBRE 1947 :

Première véritable offensive au cœur de la rébellion dans la région de Bac Kan (Viêt Bac) où se trouvait le gouvernement de Hô Chi Minh, via la R.C.4 et Cao Bang (opération Léa).

Cette offensive lancée par le général Salan marque le glas des espoirs de la VNDCCH d'arriver à une solution négociée avec la France. De même, coté français, on s'aperçoit que ce ne sera pas une guerre rapide. Les portes de la Chine sont bouclées, les forces de la VNDCCH sont encerclées. Hô Chi Minh échappe de peu à la capture, un ministre est tué, un autre capturé.

A partir de ce moment la VNDCCH se prépare à une longue guerre d'usure. Jusque là, avec de très faibles effectifs, le Corps Expéditionnaire avait repris peu à peu le contrôle du delta tonkinois, de la partie Ouest du pays Thaï et du Nord Annam.

Au Sud c'était la guérilla et le harcèlement permanent très coûteux en vies humaines. Des troupes fraîches de métropole et d'outre-mer sont arrivées progressivement jusqu'en septembre pour porter le Corps Expéditionnaire jusqu'à 115 000 hommes.
