Handwritten in album: The House in which the first teacher H. Thornton was killed by Eskimos in 1893. PH Coll 49.5b

The U.S. Government School was opened with the efforts of the American Missionary Association's Harrison Robert Thornton and William T. Lopp in 1890, under the direction of Rev. Doctor Sheldon Jackson, the first General Agent for Education for Alaska. Thorton was subsequently killed by an Eskimo in August 19, 1893.
