DescriptionFist-sized crystal of calcite, Pine Point mine, NWT.jpg |
The following is the author's description of the photograph quoted directly from the photograph's Flickr page. "Fist-sized crystal of calcite (calcium carbonate) from wastepiles of closed and abandoned Pine Point mine, Northwest Territories, Canada. Of no commercial value save that as a collector's specimen, when and where calcite forms translucent to transparent crystals. ID tip # Calcite can be scratched by a knife, but then so will many other soft white minerals. Better test is a small squirt bottle of 10% HCl (or muriatic) acid. Calcite = limestone (the biological rock of life) and it will fizz like soda pop. Don't fizz-test the exposed surface of your nice show specimen though! " |
