Description

Uncle Elstner lived in a time before the P.C. Police, so he can be forgiven for making an Irish joke i his photo album. As far as I can tell, the caption plays on the fact one of the workers has paused briefly to light his pipe.

I'm 50 percent Oirish myself, and I'm not the least bit bothered by the caption. And that 50 percent is quick to take offense and happy to nurse it for a long, long, time! However, should any viewer dislike the caption, just let me know and I will work software magic with it and make it disappear within a couple of days or a week and change.

This photo is from an album Elstner Hilton compiled in Japan between 1914 and 1918.

Elstner was my spouse's uncle.

While Uncle Elstner sometimes annotated photos that required an explanation, he never dated the pictures. So all we know is they were taken between January, 1914 and December, 1918.
