Happy Fourth of July! First flag on Guam on boat hook mast. Two U.S. officers plant the American flag on Guam eight minutes after U.S. Marines and Army assault troops landed on the Central Pacific island. This seems to be a staged photograph, although I noticed this once I colourised the picture. The officer in the right seems to pose with a fierce face, while the one on the left seems to be kind of laughing. This picture, however, was taken during real operations and the courage of these men, in both sides, is indisputable. Concerning the Second Battle of Guam, the US, with 59,401 soldiers, fought 18,657 Japanese troops. Japanese casualties stood up to a 98% of the total: 18,337 perished, including its commanders Takeshi Takashina and Hideyoshi Obata.
