Title
First (1891-1894) Home of Seattle Public Library, shown here between 1910 and 1912
Description

Transcribed from photograph: "Public Library. 1891-1894. First home of Seattle Public Library. Occidental block (Collins block). Front St., James St. and Yesler Ave. Built 1890."

The building known in the long run as the Collins Block is the one peeking out from behind the hotel at left. But the hotel building was, indeed, also erected by Collins, and was also known as the Occidental Building (and possibly at first the Collins Block).

This image is 1910 or later because the Old Public Safety Building (built 1910) can be seen on the north side of Yesler at Fourth Avenue. Can't be much after that, though, because the buildings torn down to build the Smith Tower are still there.
