ntmortar was generally mixed in the proportion of 2% parts of sandto 1 of cement. Above the limits of the Portland cement work natural cementmortar has been used, mi^ed in the proportion of 2 parts of sand to1 of cement, except that toward the close of the season, when thework might be affected by frost, Portland cement mortar, mixed inthe proportion of 3 parts of sand to 1 of cement, was used. In all, 17,703 barrels of Giant Portland cement and 8,892 barrelsof Union natural cement have been used in the work, both brandsof cement being manufactured by the American Cement Company ofEgypt, Pa. The stone in the triangular section of the dam, where Portlandcement was used, was laid Avith beds inclined upward toward thedown-stream face of the dam at the rate of 1 vertical to 4 horizontal.Above this section the stones in the down-stream half of the damhave had their beds inclined upward at the rate of 1 vertical to 6horizontal. AND SEWERAGE BOARD. 91 face of large boulders and cemented gravel which was very firm in-deed, and where the granite cliff was overhanging, masonry laid innatural cement mortar was tilled in against the cliff and between thedown-stream face of the dam and the boulders and cemented gravelto a height of 28 feet, close to the granite cliff, and a diminishingheight as the distance from the cliff increased. This filling wasmade for the double purpose of supporting the overhanging cliff,which farther up stream would have the weight of a portion of thedam upon it, and in part to furnish a solid I)uttress which wouldresist any tendency of the. dam to slide upon its foundation. Thearea of this buttress, where in contact with the boulders and cementedgravel, was about 830 square feet.
